Activities under RUP Inception Phase

There are number of activities under RUP inception phase. These activities are derived from the industrial best practices involved in software development.

The activities are as follows:

1. Conceive new project
2. Prepare Project Environments
3. Prepare Environment for an Iteration
4. Define Project Plans
5. Monitor and control project
6. Manage the scope of the system
7. Define the system
8. Perform Architectural Synthesis
9. Define Evaluation mission
10. Manage Iteration
11. Plan for next Iteration

One can select any of these activities and design a workflow using these activities. The selection of the activities must be done on the requirements of the project. I will be discuss these activities individually in coming posts.

The Business Case artifact discussed in the previous post is an artifact developed and used in first activity i.e. Conceive New Project.

Business Case for RUP inception phase

This artifact provides the necessary information from a business standpoint to determine whether or not this project is worth investing in. For a commercial software product, the Business Case should include a set of assumptions about the project and the order of magnitude return on investment (ROI) if those assumptions are true. For example, the ROI will be a magnitude of five if completed in one year, two if completed in two years, and a negative number after that. These assumptions are checked again at the end of the Elaboration phase, when the scope and plan are defined with more accuracy.

Purpose

The main purpose of the Business Case is to develop an economic plan for realizing the project vision. Once developed, the Business Case is used to make an accurate assessment of the return on investment (ROI) provided by the project. It provides the justification for the project and establishes its economic constraints. It provides information to the economic decision makers on the project's economic worth and is used to determine whether the project should move ahead.
